Gorgeous Saturday evening.
Eked out another 1-0 win. Boys played well. Offense is hard to come by for us. 6 goals for 6 against over 5 games.

Been there. Tough to coach "stressful" 1-0's every week because any bounce could make it 1-1, 0-1, or 1-2! But if your team sticks to it all of a sudden those 1-0's become 4-0's

From the sidelines I could see at least 10 or more opportunities where the boys have a clear shot on net from either inside or top of the box. NO ONE shoots. They make the pass every time. Crazy. My strikers spread out to either side of the field, no matter how many times I tell them to work together. I will go bald soon, but not naturally.
hahaha ya getting players to understand positioning is so difficult. In my last u17 season I wanted to tie a tether to a player (winger) and the fence to keep him on the touchline. lol nothing worked no matter how many ways and times it was explained to him and he verbalized understanding!
Took me 2 full seasons to teach one of the fullbacks that he was allowed to go over centre, and the other that he wasn't actually the left winger LOL.

My biggest issues: Wide on offense, compact on defense. Oh and we don't need to carry the ball every time. Please just make a pass. But not in the box. That's when we shoot. PLEASE JUST SHOOT!

Who knows? We might have played easoccer's side.
Got knocked out in first round of cup play after a 1-0 loss Sat evening downtown. Controlled most of the play for first 15 minutes, and for the most part outplayed our opponents. We failed to convert our opportunities, especially after our opponents went down to 10 players due to a sending off around the hour mark.

We play in District 5. We played ASA Hurricanes this past weekend.

Very much the same for our side re: box play. Also would like to see our side look to switch play more often - so many opportunities to create 1v1 opportunities in open space, but no, the preferred route was to try to play through a crowd on the opposite wing. :-(My biggest issues: Wide on offense, compact on defense. BTW, I suppose everyone in 4D has seen that the district has now posted schedules for rest of the season - along with explanation for the delay in maintaining scores/standings/scheduling.
Only wish that something had been posted earlier. Doesn't take that much time fore someone to craft a one-paragraph update.

We had an interesting Saturday evening. District decided to re-draw out round of cup games, which meant that we only found out our opposition on Tuesday (which meant that most field bookings were already taken so we had a 7:30pm kickoff on Saturday in West Van, travelling from New West). Due to the late change we were missing 3 players who already had family plans based on the initial cup draw, and although we had 11 players only 9 made it to the game on time so we were 2 players short for the first 10 minutes. It was a well contested 0-0 draw, which we managed to put away 2-1 in extra time - great effort from an exhausted 11 players against a competitive team who seemed to have no end of substitutes available!

Is it your team that you said plays 3-2-3-2? If so, try a formation switch to get more width. Setting-up narrow allows the opposition to be compact which makes defending their own defensive third easier.

We normally play 3-2-4-1. We tried 2 strikers (3-2-3-2) for the single game last week. This weekend I tried a flat 4-3-3. It did not produce any better results as the 3 strikers were so far apart from each other it may as well have been a single striker.
I may just go to a 4-4-2 and be done with it. LOL No point in forcing the offence when I don't have anyone who wants to shoot the ball on the team.
Well if I can offer some friendly advice to you (that's what these forums are for!). The front 3 in a 4-3-3 are not "strikers." You only have 1 striker in a 4-3-3. The two wide forwards are wingers. The winger on the weak side of the attack has to slide into a central position when the ball is on the opposite side of the pitch to support the central striker, who also has to drift to the side the ball is on. The winger on the side the ball is on essentially has to park on the touchline etc. However, regardless of the formation you choose in a 4-3-3 (there are numerous variations) your midfield 3 has to be an exceptional unit, and your full backs have to understand exactly when to push forward and when not. Your wide players have to understand when to defend (drop deep to help midfield), and when not. It takes a lot of practice, and shadow play (which is hard to do when it's rainy, windy and cold on a Tuesday evening with a small corner of a turf pitch to train on!)
I have played many formations over the years. When you start to get into variations of formations the players need to do shadow training to understand their roles, and even then difficulties arise. I coached a team in the spring not so long ago in a 5-3-2-1, and it went very well against strong opposition. When we went into the winter period we had some minor roster changes, so switched to a 3-5-2, against weaker opposition - and despite actually having a stronger group of players in the winter period we struggled. The players didn't understand what decisions to make when. I switched to a 4-4-1-1 and everything clicked and on we went to success and most importantly, enjoyment. My point is, simpler the better when things aren't quite clicking.
This would be my suggestion for you - start simple, then go forward from there. When I started with my last u16's we played 4-4-2. But by the end we had morphed into a 4-3-3 with a holding mid, central mid, and attacking mid - it took almost 2 years for the players to fully understand their roles so that when the next coach took over they continued with a similar formation and the team cruised.
