Changes afoot south of the Fraser

I've heard that there is a BC Soccer initiative asking/requiring Delta Youth, SurDel, and SMSA to form a new District of sorts to be in place in time for the 2016/17 season.

Nothing really confirmed and totally 'second-hand' info but good for discussion here.

What do you think? Good, bad or indifferent?

Delta and Surrey tax payers pay for the facilities and as such are entitled to an overwhelming majority of the field allocation. DYSA is already pushing the envelope having Coastal in the mix. Increasing the usage of non-residents of both surrey and delta parks will have disgruntled clubs up in arms; not to mention the other user groups who are already competing with soccer for field time.

A district merger would not entitle Surrey teams to use Delta fields and vice versa. Abbotsford and Langley share a district and they don't get to use each other's fields, and I suspect every City/municipality has the same rules. A district merger would simply pool the teams together for cups (and leagues), and open membership and board positions to a larger pool.

A merger would eliminate restrictions on the number of out of district players that are allowed to cross municipal borders. This would create a strong possibility for the resident ratio of a club to exceed the 80/20 rule.

How does coastal get by this? Their facilities are in Surrey.

SurDel is based in Delta but gets time at surrey fields as well.

BC Coastal Girls contains the teams and clubs that would be in the new district and this hasnt been an issue for them.

From my understanding, the Delta Coastal Selects have their fields allocated based on the makeup of each o their teams. Should they have more South Surrey players, they use South Surrey fields. I can't speak to the details of SurDels bookings short of saying their makeup either falls into the 80/20 rule, they lie about their membership residency numbers and/or there isn't the same demand for girls sports on the fields so it hasn't become a political issue.

Again, how far do we want to push the envelope here? Play by the rules and soccer clubs won't bump heads with residents and other ratio complaint user groups.

If the districts merged then they would not be out of district players. Honestly, I don't see too many Delta players going to Surrey and vice-versa regardless. It'll happen time to time, certainly.

Just FYI I don't agree Delta should merge with Surrey. I think Richmond should merge with Delta!

Yes Richmond seems like a more likely group to be merged with anyone.

I think you are confusing BC Soccer's Youth Districts with the Municipality Boundaries. BC Soccer can do whatever they like with their regions/districts/groupings however, that has no bearing on the municipal rules their member clubs have to follow. Like anything in life, it has to fit within all of the regulations or its not practical.

Most of these problems would go away if the clubs were their own associations (that accepted girls) with their own boundaries and BC Soccer used their existing competitive districts for league play. Knock out a level of bureaucracy. Heaven knows their are already enough people with their hands in the pockets of our players' families.

The merger of DYSA, SMSA and South District is official, as voted at the BC Soccer AGM. South Fraser Youth District will be registered effective April 1, 2017.

The existing districts will remain until August 2017 for the purposes of forming teams for the 2017/18 fall season.

I was thinking hard about that, but wasnt sure. Delta will be at a bit of a disadvantage with all of the clubs in surrey popping up. Each club will get a seat I guess, but members will still get to vote at district agms. Hopefully it will improve the scenery.

Does anyone know what district or governing body Metro Select teams and BCSPL teams fall under. There are teams of joint ventures that are not mentioned under any specific district:
