So the first weekend is in the books, how did everyone do?

Any craziness happen?

I saw someone post a video on youtube that was "interesting":

We played our opening game this weekend. U16 div 2. It was also quite chippy. Our opponent received a red card. Lots of f bombs. Physical play. But it was a good game and hands were shaken after.

We won 1-0.

From the video I can see that, yes some seemed flagrant, but also some seemed very soft and maybe even several dives.

The biggest issue I have is that I was told at our coaches meeting that this year there would be zero tolerance on swearing. At this age kids should not be saying WTF ref, etc. A caution should be given no matter what. But so far nothing.

Also, I expect good behavior out of my players at all times. I understand adrenaline but I hear coaches making excuses or encouraging tough guy behavior. This is not apprapriate at any age or level. Im more embarrased for the coach.

I watched the whole game, yes game was competitive and physical
Referee had good grip
as for the video...its one sided , only recorded ccb players
BTW.. person recording it is the same old NCU coach who was suspended by Bc soccer last yr indefinitely for making racial comments...get a life bro

Our game was a nice 1-0 win. Nice because I'm pretty sure any fouls were accidents - no chippy / cheap play or mouthing off from either team.

That game in the video had a lot of in the back shoves, and leaving the foot in on tackles. Some refs call all of those, some don't. Vast majority seemed like fouls to me. We got the same message about talking back to referees. Zero tolerance, and I agree with it completely. I just hope the referees follow through. Many of the younger ones are scared to send a player off, never mind a coach!

There is apparently an SMSA meeting this week. Probably won't know anything until after that. :(

All the emails from concerned pufc coaches and player go through Harj(ccb) so ccb may be getting bigger soon. Lol.

For real though, the same may happen to another new small club or two in the coming years.

It's pretty obvious this is only half the story.

This is a totally biased video, he did not show his team getting 2 Red Cards and 4 yellow. The video Man was shouting racist remarks himself and he cut all of that out. It is very bad that he posted a very biased video.

I,m all for zero tolerance on bad discipline by coach,s ,managers, players & parents. Many refs are way too lenient and the game needs refs to be firm and dish out punishment as per the rules

2 red cards per team, double that in yellows?

Could be a one-off, but could also be that the ref didn't manage the game well in a bid to reduce the "aggression". Often people are quick to blame players, and do not criticize refs. They are paid but are essentially volunteers. Of course they can walk-away anytime, and any criticism should be balanced and used as a teaching moment.

My point is, CCB and NCU coaches/players should receive appropriate discipline (players get the suspensions associated with reds and dependent on how many they've had in the past, and coaches should be put on warning or possibly greater discipline as well) but the ref should receive guidance and supervision over the next few weeks for educational purposes as well - possibly not be allowed to ref teams of that level for a while.

Everyone needs to use moments like this to learn - I speak from the voice of experience having had my own discipline issues. They have to be learned from (I like to think I've learned from mine!).

I would not be surprised if the coaches are warned/disciplined, and maybe even be required put up a bond. From what I can see, this was a really poorly managed game on all sides. I'm surprised with that many reds/yellows that the game wasn't ended early.

You can't end a game early just because reds/yellows are being handed out. If a fight broke out...or threats, sure. But regular in-game discipline is not a sufficient reason to abandon a match.

This is not regular in game discipline. If this was only half of the cards given out, then this game was out of control.

Allow me to say although we reference a video, I am speaking "in theory" or "in general." I wasn't there, don't know anyone on either team and am not even based in that district, and the video is clearly one-sided.

You and I define "out of control" resulting in a match needing to be be abandoned differently it appears. Multiple red/yellow such as it was (4 reds??) can be defined as out of control, sure. But, multiple yellow/red does not result in match abandonment unless one team, or both, fall below the required number of players on the field. From the evidence on the video there's no reason to abandon the game.

Discipline for both teams, and quite posssibly the ref (again the video is completely 1-sided, and in truth the ref appeared very calm, quick to make decisions, spoke to players about what he was calling etc). I did find it concerning in the video the CCB players seemed to have no comprehension of what a bookable offence or foul is, considering their age (note: these kids knew exactly what they were doing IMO).

I don't envy the discipline committee in this case!

Note here is an example of professional matches being abandoned - note the severity of the issues that lead to this: Soccer Rules Q&A Search AskTheref.com.

Should youth be held to a higher/safer standard? Maybe! But, I am not sure this is outlined anywhere in BCSA giving refs this leeway guidance of what can lead to a match being abandoned or terminated. Maybe there should be such a guide if there isn't one.

You are right. There is not enough information in the video to draw the conclusion. Those 2 red cards could come from the 4 yellows. I dont know.

I have seen games ended early for weather, time constraints, roudy parents, and even a single hard foul that led to aggressive play. Im not a ref and I dont envy the job.
