Thanksgiving long weekend - how did you teams fair if you played in a tournament of otherwise?

Rumour circulating that 4 District will finally be updating results and standing - nothing yet but fingers crossed that something happens!

Our U16 gold team played in a catch-all tournament pool vs two U17 silver teams and a U18 silver side. A 3-0 win and a 3-3 draw vs the U17s, and a 2-0 loss to the U18s. More or less what you'd expect.

Many thanks to the coaches and organizers for making the Thanksgiving Tournament possible.

Hearing the same about 4D, but not holding my breath just yet...

Had a great weekend at the Richmond tournament. The Wesburn U14 gold 1 won their bracket against some good teams from Surrey Pegasus, Coastal FC and Kamloops Blaze. Was a good, well run tournament.

Oh yes, we had a great time this past weekend. Monsoon on Saturday, Beautiful weather on Sunday. We played with 12 players when we could. 7 yellow cards, 2 red cards, coach asked to sit out a game for dissent in which the parents coached (I'm so ashamed, especially since it was a 7-0L). We went from beating the top team in the 1st game 1-0 to losing to the bottom Silver 2 team 1-0, all heck broke loose with 7 yellows and a red card. Next game we played short a striker hurt, a defender red card for hand ball in the crease, another defender from a red in the previous game for 2 yellows, so we lost that game 7-0. Then we had revenge on the 1-0 loss with a 6-1 win when our number were back up.

A really fun weekend celebrated with Pizza afterward. I was proud of the boys. Played with heart even though hurt, sick, man down in 2 games. Not to mention the coach on the sideline.

I talked to Bob Harrison from Richmond this past weekend and he said that after tiering this weekend the standings should start to be posted.

Not sure. He said after this past weekend they would tier. My assumption is they will just start with the new results after tiering.

Had a confidence building tournament at the Wesburn Mini-Gobbler over the weekend.
Our U11's went undefeated in the Gold category and recorded clean sheets throughout.
Unfortunately one of the sides should not have been placed in the "bracket" however, the other matches were more competitive and played to 2-0, 3-0, & 3-0 finals.
Currently on a good run of form!

Cup final for u11's? Oh dear.
Why not?

Sometimes I think the whole no scoring / development only crowd tends to forget that winning is actually fun and having something to strive for and achieve is ALSO beneficial.

Tournaments are the perfect place for this.

Tournaments are the perfect place for this.

1. The players know the score. They are playing to win regardless.
2. BCSA has outlawed keeping scores at this age for a very good reason - too many coaches/parents play to win when these kids are still learning how to train, let alone how to play and compete. Keeping scores/medals at this age IN CANADA puts the cart before the horse. In other countries with an established development system from youth-to-pro, with payments made from pro clubs to youth clubs for signing players, with a pro system players can strive for an youth clubs understanding what development standards those pro clubs are looking for ... perfectly OK. In Canada, we simply don't have any of that outside the BCSPL starting to get a better picture of what the Whitecaps are looking for, and the Whitecaps getting a better picture every year of what it takes to compete in USL, MLS, and for Canada at the international level.

Coach of u11's the other day said "10 year old should never pass up the middle." I asked him "when's a better time? No scores are being kept. What's there to lose?" He saw my point....we're scared to lose, which means we're missing critical development lessons.

Keeping scores at u11 in Canada is wrong.

I totally agree. While it should be geared more to development, the kids still talk about the wins and who scored, etc.
You may not need to do it in their regular season, a tournament is the perfect place for it.

I do agree doing so in tournaments is better than league. But BCSA has banned this practice so why are they getting permission to host tournaments by BCSA when the tournaments contravene BCSA rules? It makes no sense.

Did he say there was a final or that those were the final scores in his games. Its unclear to me. But when checking wesburns site it said no score or standings kept for u12 and under.

To clarify, the Wesburn tournament which we participated in over the thanksgiving weekend did not have any finals.
Each team in their various groups (Gold, Silver, etc.) played four games. Everyone received a medal.
Scores and results were were kept by the official in charge of the match however to my knowledge they were not reported publicly.

For what it's worth I believe that tracking results and scores does add value.
It assists in measuring where a team, or an individual, is in their development and it becomes part of the process for setting goals.

Sports and Games all have one thing in common: a result.
People play to have fun, and part of that fun comes from competing with and alongside others.

(other tournaments had finals etc)

Part of the story/assessment? Yes, but as you said just a "part". I do believe a lot of the issues re: scores impacting coach decisions will be largely resolved when a Canadian Premier League is established because clubs will learn over the first years of that league what type of players those clubs are seeking. The youth clubs will want to produce as many players as possible for that league so they will respond in kind with their development expectations - you'll see increased coaching standards. I have been reading about in Spain how many of the "top" clubs pick the best athletes. So this is not unique to Canada. The difference between here and there is that there is a clear professional ladder after youth, so clubs are able to identify clearly what professional level the youth is best prepared for etc...

Thank you for that.
We agree that increasing coaching standards is fundamentally more important as it pertains to improving player development in Canada. At the end, the whole will be greater than the sum of its' parts :D
