Welcome to British Columbia where the soccer leadership at all levels is as dysfunctional as it ever has been.

It's been over a year since I told Metro Soccer leadership that their reporting forms are insecure... and they still are, I just checked as was able to download the Boys, Girls, and Referee reports submitted for the last several years.

It's one thing to not be technically inclined, it's another to ignore those who are.

Went to look at the standings..

Dist 5 will find excuses for this but they def can,t blame Mr Trump .
The Leage needs to take responsibility & admit if they are not capable of updating standings & placing teams at appropriate levels. All coaches , parents & players who pay fees should email them and demand answers .
Here,s the contact email for the Dist 5 chair Lui Rossi <luirossi@telus.net>

I don't disagree with the dysfunctionality of the league (and leagues in general), please understand that Mr. Rossi has been 5DL Chair for less than a year. And he only volunteered to be Chair when nobody else would. It's easy to complain from behind an anonymous email account. Not sure it's fair to post someone's personal email address from that perspective. Also, as I've said before, please volunteer to serve on the board, I'm sure they would take you. Go through your club or district and be your district rep. That's where it starts. The leagues - all of them - need fresh blood. What we are experiencing now is that the leagues have, for the most part, been run by the same people for many, many years. The league are not only unable to keep up with the times and technology, they have also not come up with or implemented any kind of succession plan. This is proving to be true now in light of the unfortunate passing of George Riddell.

The 5-District chair isn't responsible for updating the website. I give this season a pass, as with George's passing, the fellow taking over the scheduling and standings was put in a tough spot. The comment about the leagues needing fresh blood...true or not, the reason they are run by the same people year after year is that nobody steps up. Same at club level. Find me this magical, mythical line up of people clamoring to volunteer, just so they can put up with people whining at them.

We often take for granted the tireless efforts and countless hours volunteers put forth until they step a side or pass along. Volunteering at a board is a thankless job, most can't be bothered to volunteer but are quick to attack the efforts of those that do.
Hopefully the issue is resolved quickly and we can resume staring at the standings for countless hours once again...

The schedules and standings were on this site for years without issue. Moving them away is a big mess. At least in the short term. Im sure this site would have put in extra effort to keep things running.

RIP George, but a lot of the issues were are facing is because of the control he wanted/had over the standings, tiering, scheduling, etc.

Guys/Gals, what we need is ONE THING (AS I NOW TYPE IN CAPS LOCK PURPOSELY) -
1 MAGICAL THING - INCREASE ALL RATES FOR THE FALL SEASON BY $25. WITHIN THE 4 SURREY CLUBS YOU'D GENERATE APPROX $150,000 IN OVER AND ABOVE REVENUE.
THESE FUNDS COULD BE SOLELY BE PROVIDED TO 2 INDIVIDUALS WORKING FULL TIME (FOR BC SOCCER THE OVERARCHING GOVERNING BODY) TO MANAGE SOCCER RELATED FUNTIONS AS MADE REFERENCE IN THESE POSTS.
ACTUALLY, LET'S INCREASE RATES $100 PER SEASON FOR ALL DIST5 AND YOU WOULD HAVE CLOSE TO >$1M EXCESS IN FUNDS TO SUPPORT THE PROPER MANAGEMENT OF SOCCER IN THE LOWER MAINLAND.
........NOW.....WHO'S GOING TO CARRY THIS TORCH AND EXECUTE AS WE ALL KNOW TIME IS PRECIOUS AND NO VOLUNTEER IS GETTING PAID TO BUILD OUT THIS MODEL......

as radical as this post might appear there is some validity. It seems today that there are less quality volunteers or qualified volunteers to continue to advance the game. Those great volunteers of yester year that have the time (retired individuals) dont have the energy or technical aptitude to keep up.
I am generalizing of course but...

the lower mainland of BC and BC in general's ecenomic climate has eliminated many families with young children's ability to volunteer 10 to 30 hours per week to keep essentially a volunteer based sport successful.

It is for this reason that clubs are moving paid staff, TD's and ED's. The next step as we are seeing with Cascadia Spring soccer is to pay professional sports management companies to run leagues.

Its just the natural course it appears and these paid services come at a cost.

I am ok with it as it holds the paid people accountable and in many cases the value return to pay is good.

Its hard to fire an incompetent volunteer that takes up the chair of a potentially great volunteer but if a management company or paid individual isnt providing value for the pay than you can easily remove them and replace them with someone else.

Why BC Soccer isnt undertaking some of these initiatives is a question but I suppose again that BC soccer is managed again by mostly volunteers.

Indeed - can leagues etc improve? Definitely. Should we be slamming the volunteers running them? Definitely not.

Sounds like a lot of us have volunteered in one capacity or another over time - imagine how you'd feel when you are or were volunteering reading remarks like some of these negative ones when you are spending time on an already largely thankless job. Everyone here and on boards are trying to give the kids the best those kids can get. Period. Full stop. Should we always look to improve? Yes definitely. But not by slamming our volunteers. I work with volunteer coaches 4 times a week. I can't thank them enough! Am I working with my club to help them improve? Every day. And in this way, I am also improving myself.

Maybe the Cascadia league could be pilot project with 11 management aiming for something bigger. And even if they arent, a smooth summer league could lead to further opportinities.

Agreed that others don't need to be extremely pessimistic as the management of the bodies and organizations are little askew.
Like the idea of Cascadia but there does need to be a project lead to better integrate the clubs while removing personal bias and agenda's of the many..........
Increasing reg fee's is one of so many steps but in this busy world we all live in there is very few, good volunteer's that can move the needle on such a large, all encompassing change that's needed.
Certainly a business case can be built by a group so to further exploit the opportunity.......

The 4d standings have been a total wash this year, but the 5d updates weren't too bad. Weird how the regular season standings got wiped after the championship series got posted.

All in all, the msl updates were atleast pretty thorough & updated regularly.

MSL has one of those long standing volunteers I speak of in Peter Price and therefore that league and its admin is fairly organized. I suspect that if Peter chooses to step down or allow someone else to shoulder the heavy load than MSL will be in the same predicament as 4 district or 5.

I suggest all districts form one fall league and pay a management team or company or hire individuals to go about the sanctioning, admin and technical side. Spring soccer with all 10 districts in one league and managed by a professional company might be the model to follow or is there bigger things on the horizon for that same management company??

LTPD has to be the theme for what decisions are made and many clubs, I think, don't have this as a top priority and may treat LTPD as lip service.
Having the admin is one thing but to make decision on TD whose livelihood's are at stake is another issue in itself.
Either BC Soccer takes on the tasks at hand while pushing forth with set processes or a management company has to get involved as that extra layer between BC Soccer and the clubs while utilizing the funds from increased registrations to fund their activities.

Who's on first for this one......?
