Districts split by genders

Anyone know the reasoning behind having separate 'district' associations split along gender lines?

For example, is there a purpose for Surrey to have the SMSA represent boys and the SDGSA represent the girls?

I would assume it has to do with the amount of players on the boys and girls side.

More boys = Smaller catchment areas. SMSA is within Surrey. DYSA is within Delta.

Less Girls = Larger catchment area. SDGSA is Surrey/Delta.

Surely there must be a better system where clubs belong to a single district, regardless of gender sizes and 'catchment' areas.

Do you know any of the history on how the current system came to be?

You piqued my interest about Surrey Delta girls soccer so poked around, to see that the SurDel Girls Soccer is 40 years old! Formed in 1974, they are much older than the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club (BGSC) that my girls play with (formed in 1991). In the relatively short time my girls have played soccer, the numerous clubs, associations, districts, etc just in the lower mainland, for different age groups, genders, tiers & so on, has certainly been puzzling. Suffice to say there must be a lot of interesting stories behind many of these divisions, and no doubt they will continue to change.

Maybe there might be someone from SDGSA who can shed light on why they formed originally, and opine why there is a gender division. It probably isn't a simple answer to the question either.

What interests would those be that are so different from the boys this day and age?

Maybe if we looked at it a different way. You have one group with 75% of the players, and another group with 25% of the players. Who's to say that the concerns of the smaller group can be heard as easily as those of the much larger group? Not to mention the boys and girls play within different leagues with different guidelines. It make sense to have an association within that league created to handle those issues.

And, really I am offering my opinion based on specualtion and what I could think may be the case. I am in no postion to provide the exact reasononing behind this. I have no idea how things may have been 40 years ago.

So if females are getting a 'raw deal' these days, that's a club issue I would think, no?

Please add the very large club North Shore Girls Soccer Club (NSGSC) to your list of female only clubs! I'm sure most clubs are making effort to provide the same level of service to their girl's teams nowadays....

Besides the 3 already mentioned: SurDel Girls, BGSC & NSGSC, add 2 more...

- Richmond Girls Soccer Association (RGSA)
- Ladner Girls Soccer Club (LGSC,part of SDGSA)

I remember discussions about combining Surdel with NDSC to improve buying power for equipment/jerseys etc but I believe a stumbling block was SurDel has access to fields in both Surrey and North Delta. If they were to join with SFC or NDSC they would lose access to either the Surrey or ND fields. I could be wrong...
