Our league was started a year ago with a pilot Spring season which consisted of five academies. We expanded to seven academies for our first Fall season, which ran from September until December 2017. Both of these playing seasons were a huge success and were highly enjoyable for all who participated. We decided to open the BCASL up for an expansion in 2018, and we are currently getting ready to draw up our playing schedules with twelve academies registered to take part.

Looking for some feed back on the League IF Any available. Our Academy just joined so I am just curious of the level of play, organisation, etc.

Obviously they just started operating 1yr Ago(spring 2017 Pilot....fall 2017/2018 and now Spring 2018)so there will be hickups etc.

They have quite a few known Academies(Falay, Supra, FCBEscola) but they are also lacking TSS I see. Obviously being Academies of different sizes NOT All Age groups will be represented evenly.

My kids normally play for Richmond FC and have been attending Martin Bittengl School of Soccer for the 2nd year now.

Last year we played in Richmond FC Spring League and my son hated it.

I also saw a lot of parents didn’t take it seriously. We couldn’t even Field a team sometimes to play 6v6 on a sunny day.....

I guess what I am hoping for is a nice competitive level. Since some Academies will look to show off their training(by winning).

Hi Greg, interesting as we are in a similar situation.

At the risk of taking the thread in a tangent, I'd love to hear about your experience with MBSOS. It'll be the first year - this spring that my son will attend that academy. We've been at TSS the last 2 years and yes, curious they are not listed.

In response to your question, I surmise this will provide some structure to the inter-academy games that occur. The limited info I received is 10 league games are planned. Each academy seems to only be fielding certain age groups so depending on the player's DOB they may not actually play against all the other academies.

With all competitive team sports win/loss does seem to be the defacto metric of success. However I'm most interested to see how this affects the training from each academy and whether that will affect their approach. ie) raise the bar of acceptability in practices or tailor the training in academy practices. Academy coaches don't usually get the opportunity to evaluate the players in full game situations since most games are played with BC Soccer clubs.

Also interesting for those juggling between academy games in the BCASL and spring development team play in other leagues like Cascadia.

I don’t mind sharing my experience. I have 2kids with the Academy(twins Boy/Girl 2008). We came first for trial as we had friends that were coached by Martin(RGSA at the time). One thing that blew me away is his approach with kids.

He transformed my daughter from being shy and scared of the ball to do actual challenges and reinforced her mentally that Unfortunately me as a parent coach(being bias here) wasn’t able to do. Martin, Wojtek(went back to Czech Rep.) worked great. And this year I see the fruits of the labor from different staff coming thru. My son really likes Othmane but he usually work with the older kids U16.

We did games vs Volf, Faly, FCBEscola. Etc. It’s interesting the. To see the different styles of play for each academy.

I think it's important to remember that a "good" academy (in the current climate) is not proven by wins (someone mentioned above some academies will want to show their value through W's). While posting W's in this league and maybe tournaments will encourage others to sign-up that hopefully is the least of people's considerations.

What Greg said about the change in his daughter is how academies should be measured. Well said.

Re: style of play - clubs, academies etc, can only play the style that the players they have at hand allow them. Man City can play the way they do because of the players they have. Could Man United play that way? .... maybe somewhat, but not completely. Could Barcelona? Of course, that's the team Pep is modeling them after. Could Everton? No.

As far as W's go, a coach is only as good as the players they have and how they deploy those players. Horses for courses! As a youth coach should we be teaching technical skill? Yes, of course. Should we try and teach kids so they can develop into possession-based, technically strong kids? Of course. But that doesn't happen overnight.

Assuming it fluctuates due to not every club have teams at every age. That's fine. Those programs will enter tournaments. Hopefully the league grows and stabilizes.

Although actual spring season hasn’t started we played a game vs one of the leagues members. We had a mix team of 08/09 boys they on the other hand looked like fielded older players 07/08.

It was played at Fortius Field there were other games roughly same age bracket. I can definitely say there was more intensity in the game(vs Richmond FC house games) Reason could be it was the last one of the season.

Overall no issues teams, refs and Field were there as supposed. We also had a warmup session.

We will see how it goes in April.

Correction both teams fielded 08/09 I was I formed by a parent from the other team.
