It does not matter where you play, what matters is what kind of coach you have. As a youth player it is all about your skill development. wins and loses really don't mean a thing. Making mega clubs or mega districts is just a paper work. Most of them paper pushers never played a game. What I do not like when directors cheat in youth development. TD try's to run two districts or clubs to cheat and get his kids to higher level. Just look at Burnaby head guy and you will see it. The trouble is most kids selected do not have speed for today's game. Kids get shafted at the end and parents pay through their noses and leave bitter for years. All this can be changed with one right person to direct the flow properly. There is kids that play soccer for seven years and yet can not juggle the ball seven times. Ask your self why and what is wrong with your TD and your coach. Fraser Valley has tons of kids one guy with proper program could rebuild our National program in five years. Fighting for a spot on HPL means nothing. System is totally unfair due to BC Soccer not looking what is going on. I do know Rob knows the game and should kick all that rich kids only crap out. Cheers no better development than summer tournaments in BC and US. Div one soccer in US is all you need if you really want to be soccer player. Tournaments across the line is only way forward for all the good players from BC. Hats off to Zico for good job with kids.

I love how total base always reiterates the Burnaby TD having 2 positions. Does that mean he gets 2 separate pay cheques? I think I know who he's talking about though.

But TD's have easy jobs. They could make an upwards of 60k a year & do what really? I hardly see any coach development, player development is minimal at best. All I really know is they respond to hundreds of email complaints by parents who feel there kid should get more playing time. That & organize tryouts which these days is just a game. There probably some good TD's out there but not many

You must have quite a negative experience. I have experience with two TD's - while every TD has up/down (as with everything) these two work very hard within the constraints their board/budgets put upon them to deliver quality programming to address coach and player development. In the end lack of player development has to be answered to by the CSA, and BCSA.

Burnabu guy also runs a club in Vancouver. To me that is how all that pouching starts. One try's to sit on two chairs almost every time will end up on his ars. The biggest problem is over coaching of kids at young age. Most get turned off by fourteen due to over pushing on win loss. KIds need to learn skill and play tournaments every three weeks to develop skill. TD's charge kids for try out question is do they report the money they get. You will only get best players out if the program cost zillch. CSA has nothing to do with kids. It falls to each Province the way it sits now. CSA is funded by kids do you think they will rock the boat. Most up there get 150 000.00 a year for very little showing. If you did watch Costarica vs Canada game you would see what I am talking about. We work hard buy skill level is three out of ten. We do not need TD's we need better coaching. But first we must admit that this is the problem.

You catch that USA Martinique game? Super entertaining. Sat threw the whole thing.

Canada is still a ways away. Don't have too much quality upfront. Though a couple more players come threw like Davies & there might be some hope.

We are OK on D as far as Canada goes and always did. The trouble is in last third our players always drive forward and turn the ball over way much. Young Davies has got ways to get there. He try's hard and runs but in tight still turns the ball over. I was watching their last game and can say that Findley is doing a better job than guys before him. As far as youth development goes it is not doing a thing for Canada. Twenty year old men should be ready to play any country or they just do not have it. No coach can spend time to teach men in National program. We are way behind on strength on the ball and movement off the ball.
They have my clip board could have helped them. Biggest problem is in coaching instructors. Coaches teach what they were thought.
Most read books and coach from sheets. Knowing that each player needs are totally different, it is just dumb to work will all of them on a same thing.

Again our men just can not score a goal. Team plays hard but can not score. Even with Actavio Zambrano at helm we get sent home.
Youth coaches must let our kids dribble up top to lean the game better. Few good things I did see, team is much younger three guys off of Caps were in starting eleven. Dejong gets shafted with Caps, plays very little yet with Canada he played his heart out and played allot. Cheers young man. Actavio best of luck.

Both Canada and USA are out of World cup play. Today Italians also went home. World soccer is getting tougher by the year. Local soccer is miles behind those levels. Caps try to develop but fail on regular development. Only two three guys in last 10 years got the jobs is noting more than joke.Brits made it to World Cup Play, BC soccer has to bring few more from there to turn this country soccer around. At least we will be in shape. Yet one more loss to USA in National men play tells us we are out to lunch, it really matters not who the coach is.
I did see lot of youth play this year. Must say South Burnaby coaches have to stop screaming at kids. RCMP should check out U12 gold coach. He must be having trouble in love or self rize. Kids are shutting down, god help you if he coaches them for two more years most will need doctors help.TD was in Delta came to South to change things,it looks worse than year ago. What is the word for shotta TD. I think it should be stand up and change things that need changing. Kids need your help.

Canada and USA will never succeed so long as we stick to "suburb" soccer. There is no desperation to improve. The "top" players have zero risk to their spots on "top" teams. There is no internal drive on a grand scale. Best kid I ever coached was an African refugee. The kid was desperate. Drive to succeed for himself, his family, and the friends he left behind. The kids here have none of that. (yes, there will always be an exception - but not enough).

I say it comes down to pricing. We price kids out of the sport. Our league set-ups are wrong at the youngest ages - too formal. I say scrap this notion of one-day, one-game schedules. Get the kids playing jamborees every weekend.

Dare I say....we start keeping scores again? I don't know, I don't have the answer....

We have so many kids here with proper development our kids would be equal to any country. You can not play each other for seven years and think we have developed players. Kids must play against better soccer countries to learn and develop. HPL is just cash cow for coaches and board guys. Soccer level is still the same four out of ten. Four good players seven fill in players due to ability to pay.
Caps are pro club and only think of making money and number of fans as they must to stay in MLS.
Club soccer in some areas has improved as one can see on a score board. But due to lack of though games those kids stop developing and start bad habits because small clubs can not field a good team, beating teams 8 nill will never improve a player on good team. Most kids are one footed and do not want to work on their weak foot. They will never reach top levels due to that, coaches are more focused on what the score was.

I think the first step would be to make HPL free for the kids that make it. Paying 5 times the cost over Metro when you are supposedly the elite of the Province seems counter productive, those kids if in Europe would be getting the full pull. How do you supplement the revenue? Let the teams self promote and get sponsorship, we seem to have an aversion in Canada to any kind of sponsorship or scholarship program that helps families and kids not have to pay to play. Problem is, Whitecaps, MLS and Adidas. So if Surrey can get full kits and boots for free from Puma or Nike, they can't right now because of the Whitecaps and Adidas contract, correct? I would also open up BCSPL to playing more games across the boarder against Washington State teams, they're willing to travel to the Island and Kelowna, well Seattle and their strong soccer program is right there. But #1 for me is it starts at the top, it's an international break, why is the CANMNT not playing any friendlies? You can't improve from only practice, you have to play in games. I was blown away that our Men weren't playing at all this week. That is crazy.

Does every BCSPL team wear Adidas? hmm. Dunno.

Should BCSPL be free? Yes. Can it be? No. Not without sponsorship and fundraising as you noted. I also believe Whitecaps should be supplementing the costs of the league - they directly benefit from the players. Are the Caps currently providing financial support? I don't know, they might be? BCSA should be supplementing the costs. I don't see any issue with funneling a percentage of each registration in the province to the BCSPL. $1/player? Not sure what player registration is in this province. Is this already happening? If so, raise it to $2/player.

Coach Honorariums are also far too high. The numbers I've heard are insane. For what? What are we paying these coaches these dollars for? To get kids to university soccer? This was happening when everyone was a volunteer. To get kids to Whitecaps? Easy solution to that. Give performance bonuses. Coach a kid for 1 season who joins Caps - give them X. 2 seasons? Give them X. And have this run all the way down to the kids first year in your club. So if a kid was at Surrey United u6-14 and they had 5 coaches, then 5 coaches get a bonus cheque (even if they aren't coaching anymore, and even if they were "just a volunteer."). This would be paid by individual clubs (a percentage of every registered player at their club), and Caps should be financially supporting the league who would help with these performance bonuses.

I believe BCSPL is the right idea (small league 6-8 teams), funneling the best to play the best. Currently, this isn't happening due to cost. Travel is unavoidable if Victoria and Okanagan stay in the league (should they be in the league? I personally am not so sure about that).

Have mini-BCSPL's across the province. Lower Mainland, Victoria, Okanagan, Northern BC? Then have mini-tournaments or something throughout the year - either jamboree weekends or get togethers like the current provincial team does. Have the Lower Mainland clubs stay as is, but have the Victoria, Okanagan, and NBC leagues create an "all-star" team to travel down and play for the weekend. (or if they host of course no travel for them!). Doing this would also reduce costs (gas, food, hotels).

Uniforms - do teams need two full uniforms, a practice kit, a warm-up suit, a rain jacket, a t-shirt etc etc? NO! Shorts, socks, two jerseys, and if teams want they can order a warm-up kid. Stop treating these kids like they are professionals and then making them pay for it (the club isn't paying for this kit).

But Metro would need funding supplement too to reduce costs.

Gold teams seem to be about 250-400 per year? This isn't so bad, and clubs for sure would help a kid out if they truly couldn't afford it.

Ea Sports, who makes the annual fifa games, and who charges kids millions on microtransactions in the game, who is also based locally, should fully fund the league since their name is on it.

LosBlancos HPL will never be free. That is how they control who gets in. Latest I heard Metro select soccer will be run by Clubs and not by district. HPL remains the same. What that means clubs will have selects than gold level. As it is now Gold teams will be going all over mainland to play games as District 4 and 5 cross over in Gold one level soccer. Metro Selects will do the same if the become part of club program. Net result small clubs will die. Just think if you are U13 and you have to go to Abbottsford for 9 am game from West Van. Soccer is going nuts with BC people. In my opinion put the kid in G2 and let him develop.Forget that crap. Soccer here will never go forward with out a guy in BC office to set it straight. In my opinion Tournament teams who go to US Tournaments will have most out it. If kid is good he or she will get full ride in US Schools. What more could one ask for. Soccer schools all over the place just to make money, soccer level they teach is four out of ten. Slow fun and more fun. Three four good players in each school.

Do we have a list of players of who actually made a career playing soccer by graduating from the BC soccer system? Any bc kids get drafted to the mls?

Only players that ring a bell for me is Marcus Haber, Josh Simpson & the two Ben's.

But until we have our own domestic league all this hpl, whitecaps residency is all irrelevant. The culture here too doesn't help. The best kids can do here is get a scholarship & maybe play university soccer.

Soccer-Dude non made it very far. Marcus to some degree. Playing for twenty five grand in NASL-USL is a joke. How do you support your self. Even Caps give bench or sub guys next to nothing.
How much money Canada spends on coaches and so called programs with zero to show for. Our Ladies do better but our men are god 150th in the World. Kids here can not develop due to two reasons. Most hop from club to club due to coaches screaming and trying to win at all cost. Most coaches forget child or youth development. Second reason most players lack foot speed and tight space control. Even if they do develop where do they play.
They will not sell tickets if Caps give them a chance that's why Caps go south and get players.
To play in Europe kids U 15 must go there to train with high end players. Any later they are back few weeks or months later. Most can not put-up with five practices plus a game a week.
Playing soccer to get top end Schools in US you must go to US Tournaments to be in US player data. Playing local soccer in HPL gives them not much. UBC or SFU if they wish and only maybe two players from each club. Rest are just good enough to play U21 teams in FVSL or local div one soccer. Local kids can only hope for scholarship or college here.
Not many make it to Div one USA Schools. One or two here and there. Lack of toughness is mostly reason of not making it and foot speed. High pres game we lack in. Most of our clubs only use ana-robick energy during the game. US schools are in third gear full out up and down.
Youth development has to go back to club soccer. BC must take better players to US Tournaments to give our kids out. Going to play PEI or Nova Scotia will not give our kids chance. For most waste of money and time.
Guys from BC office get payed well none are willing to rock the boat to change things. Youth Clubs really do what they wish, most never listen to BC office. Most of them never have any money to go to any US Tournaments due to over pay of TD'S. It will take one or two guys that care about Canadian Soccer to change things.
